“The cruelties and the obstacles of this swiftly changing planet will not yield to obsolete dogmas and outworn slogans” — RFK
Austerity. Two percent inflation targets. Elon Musk running a company. There are bad ideas all around us. The problem, of course, is that some of these used to be good ideas (or at least conceivably could be under the right circumstances), and people have a hard time letting go of things that they remember working at one time. The result is that the exigencies of the present get held hostage by the memories of the past.
Obsolete Dogma is a newsletter by Matt O’Brien dissecting the ideas, both good and bad, shaping the global economy. I’ve written for The Atlantic and The Washington Post before, but this will be a more history-focused look at the economics and geopolitics behind the headlines.
Why subscribe?
This will be a free newsletter to start, and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible. Paid subscriptions, though, are very much appreciated. This is going to be an experiment in longer-form, more in-depth analysis, and that takes time. So, if you can afford one, please hit the subscribe button below. The options are:
Monthly subscription: $8-a-month
Annual subscription: $80-a-year, which gives you two months free
Founders Club subscription: $150-a-year, for if you really want to show your support
And that’s it. You won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.
Looking forward to having you on board!
